Student Loan Relief Updates

Public Service Loan Forgiveness

Temporary waiver application ends TODAY (10/31/22). To address some perceived failures of the PSLF program, the Department of Education created a temporary waiver of some of the requirements (details here). Under the waiver, borrowers may be eligible for retroactive recognition of past periods of repayment. The last day to apply is today, October 31, 2022.

Permanent changes. Even though the temporary waiver is ending, the Department has announced changes to the PSLF program that extend many of its benefits. Find the Department's announcement here. See here for more (NPR news story).

One-Time Student Loan Debt Relief

The Department has begun accepting applications for the one-time student debt forgiveness of up to $10,000 (up to $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients). Find the application portal and other information here. The application is short and takes about five minutes to complete.

Discharges under the program are currently stayed in connection with a legal challenge, but the Department continues to accept applications. The application deadline is December 31, 2023.
